King, serving in South Korea, was convicted by a Seoul court in February of assaulting an unidentified man and damaging a police vehicle in October. He was about to return home after completing his jail term.

He went to Panmunjom village on the border of the two Koreas on Tuesday. During this time he entered the border of North Korea. The purpose of his visit to Panmunjom village is not known. The American army learned of King's disappearance when he did not reach Texas.
