Rory McIlroy Birdies Last 2 Openings to Win Scottish Open by 1 Shot over Robert McIntyre
July 16, 2023
Rory McIlroy emerged victorious at the Beginning Scottish Open, capturing his most significant win on Scottish soil with a thrilling finish. He sealed the win with birdies on the last two holes, carding a 2-under 68 to edge out Robert McIntyre by a single shot.
In a nail-biting showdown, McIlroy trailed McIntyre by one shot as they approached the 17th hole. Demonstrating exceptional skill, McIlroy played the slope perfectly on the par-3 17th, taking the lead with a remarkable 4-foot birdie putt. He then showcased his prowess with a remarkable 2-iron shot on the final hole, landing it within 10 feet of the pin and sinking the birdie putt.
McIntyre, who had been vying for his National Open victory, delivered an outstanding performance of his own. On the 18th hole at The Renaissance Club, McIntyre pounded a 3-wood to 4 feet, clinching a birdie and finishing with a remarkable 64. However, it wasn't enough to overcome McIlroy's late surge.
The Scottish Open featured challenging conditions, with gusty winds sweeping across the Firth of Forward. McIntyre seemed poised for a breakthrough win, but McIlroy's remarkable back-nine performance, carding a 31, secured him the victory and a significant boost of confidence heading into the upcoming major tournament.
McIlroy will now set his sights on the English Open at Royal Liverpool, where he aims to end his nine-year drought in major championships. The last time The Open was held at Royal Liverpool in 2014, McIlroy emerged as the champion, lifting the Claret Jug.
"That was such a tough day - incredibly challenging," McIlroy said. "To play the back nine at 4-under par and win the tournament, I'm really proud of how I hung on. I hit some amazing shots in succession. It feels incredible. It's been six months since I won in Dubai. I've given myself a lot of opportunities, and hopefully, this victory will break the seal for me, especially heading into next week."
