FARGO, N.D. - Police in Fargo confirmed that an official was dead and two others injured after a shooting on Friday evening. The suspect was also killed, and a civilian sustained serious injuries.
On Saturday evening, Fargo police released more information about the officials involved, including identifying the individual who was killed - 23-year-old Jake Wallin. Wallin became a police officer in April 2023 after graduating from the Fargo Police Academy.
The two officials who sustained critical injuries are Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes. They are currently in critical but stable condition.
Police stated that the suspect, 37-year-old Fargo resident Mohamad Barakat, died from his injuries at a local healthcare facility. Barakat was subdued by Fargo police officer Zachary Robinson, who has been with the department for several years. Robinson has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases.
"The events of the past 24 hours have been among the most difficult in our department's nearly 150-year history. This was a shocking and unthinkable act of aggression against our officers and the entire metro community. As we all try to comprehend the impact this has on our community and the entire area, we are preparing for extremely challenging days ahead," said Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots as a man began shooting at the police before being shot by other officers around 3 p.m. on Friday. Subsequently, officers converged on a neighborhood approximately 2 miles away, evacuating residents while gathering evidence related to the shooting.
